We are Here Project at KGV School

Our year 8 students have been exploring the theme of ‘Identity’ through the ‘We Are Here’ project. The students aged 12-13 years old have been exploring the experiences of refugees in Hong Kong and around the world. The opening lesson asks them to imagine what object they would take with them if they had to flee their homes. They are asked to reflect on the objects real life refugees have with them and learn about the circumstances surrounding why people need to seek refuge.

Through exploring their own cultural identity they began to create a visual narrative of their own. We ask them to develop a painting and a piece of wearable art that will be worn on World Refugee Day. We explain to them by wearing the art and being featured in a photo they will be supporting the need to try and accommodate refugees whether those refugees end up in Hong Kong, or in any other part of the world. We ask them to consider the power of Art to bring about social change.

We hope the students will not only create amazing art works but also develop empathy, solidarity, and a better understanding of the lives of others around the world.
