from KGV have been selected to present at the Hong Kong regional finals of Technovation this month in Cyberport on Sun 20th May. Technovation is a girls only coding competition aimed at getting more females into programming. The girls have had to design and create an app in their teams that meet a local community need, choosing one of the UN Global development goals.

All the teams have been working really hard on thinking about a community issue, then designing and programming an mobile app using MIT App Inventor to help provide a solution. The girls then had to create a display about their ideas, and then present to a panel of judges for the Hong Kong final. The judges mentioned that Technovation it is one of the toughest competitions of its kind in Hong Kong, with 104 teams starting out and only 24 teams making it to the finals.

I’m delighted to announce that Girls Code Group [Matilda Pratt(Year 8), Scarlett Casey(Year8) and Jocelyn Lo(Year 7)] – with their Location Stations app (which aimed to reduce the use of plastics by highlighting where to find water refilling stations in Hong Kong) won an award for ‘Best Social Impact’.
