Our Connected City

Yesterday a group of our senior students had the opportunity to attend the connected City Conference at the Conference and Exhibition centre in Wan Chai. The conference showcased innovations for the next generation of city living and discussed a number of smart/connected cities and technologies from around the world. The conference focused on discussing how we can enhance Hong Kong’s liveability, workability and sustainability.

It was a wonderful opportunity for our students and myself to hear some of the new ideas and latest trends that could shape how we live into this century. Thank you to Anson Bailey from KPMG for facilitating our student visit and providing this great learning experience.

The conference also discussed what an important role education plays in the sustainability and liveability of a city. It is also vital in terms of ensuring our young people receive a high quality education that allows them to access some of the best universities in the world both here and in Hong Kong. Education provides a vibrancy to a city and ensures that our leaders of tomorrow develop the ability to solve future problems, think differently and generate wealth and opportunities.

A big theme to come through at the conference was that connected cities are ‘smart cities’ and the education, innovation and collaboration drive the growth and development of metropolises like Hong Kong. Speaking to our students, they are really passionate about our sustainability, especially from an environmental point of view. It seems with our population and density, recycling and reuse is a significant opportunity and our students are keen to be involved and lead the way.

At KGV School we are keen to connect our learning programs with the community of Hong Kong. Hong Kong is one of the most vibrant and dynamic cities in the world. Our KGV Alliance is a ‘community partnership, powered by students to create positive change’. Our next KGV Alliance meeting is on Monday 4 March and the theme is on ‘Social entrepreneurship’ where our students will showcase some new initiatives to make our city a better place.

The KGV Alliance is one way we are seeking to enact our vision where we state ‘as an agile school, we collaborate and innovate to make a difference in the communities we serve and lead.’ We are confident that our remarkable students will lead the way forward for Kong to become an even more ‘connected and smart city’.

Kind regards
