Dengue Fever

Dear all,

As most of you may know, there are 20 local cases of dengue fever uncovered recently. They are reported within a very short period of time which is very unusual! And it is possible that there are undiagnosed cases occurring in the community.

Mosquito bite is the ONLY mode of transmission for dengue fever. And all of the patients did not have travel history. It is believed that the disease is locally transmitted. Wong Tai Sin, Cheung Chau and Lion Rock are the main areas where the transmission took place.

The weather is very humid at the moment and it is important that we do all we can to limit the chance of contracting dengue fever. To minimise the risk KGV School:

  1. Has over twelve mosquitos traps that have been checked and are operational;
  2. Monitors the school grounds for possible mosquitos breeding areas and eliminates these conditions where possible;
  3. Is running the air conditioners in most areas so the doors and windows can remain closed; and
  4. Has mosquito repellent available for students from the Nurse’s office and Reception.

Personal precautions are also important, please remind your children to:

  1. Put on mosquitos repellent before going to school;
  2. Reapply mosquito repellent as instructed;
  3. Stay out of scrubby areas at school.
