Chinese Character Workshop 汉字工作坊

22 Mar 2019

As part of the Year 8 Chinese Language & Literature MYP course, 40 students visited Jao Tsung-I Academy 饶宗颐文化馆 for a cultural experience. The trip successfully brought authentic cultural richness to students’ language learning. The trip started with a guided tour of the exhibition ‘The Vivid World of Chinese Characters: From the Origin to the Future’. Students experienced a visual journey of the history and transformation of Chinese characters. The trip ended with a DIY workshop for students to work on Chinese Stone Rubbing Art with Chinese characters 汉字拓碑. Students’ feedback showed that this cultural event deepen their understanding of Chinese characters as well as language learning.

Here are some of the students’ feedback:
On 22 March, our different Chinese classes joined together as one and visited the Jao Tsung I Academy. We learned about the history of Chinese characters and how they came to be as well as their origin. My highlight of the trip was the stone rubbing art we did towards the end as I found it both fun and unique. Stone rubbing art is basically transferring the word from a stone onto a sheet of paper, with a total of 6 simple steps. I rubbed out the word ‘dragon’ in Chinese while all my other friends rubbed out other words from the stone, creating beautiful works of art. It was a very enjoyable trip as we were able to learn things and physically do something we probably wouldn’t come across in our daily lives.

On Friday, 22 March, I went to Jao Tsung-I Academy along with Year 8 Chinese First Language classes. The Jao Tsung-I Academy is a place where they exhibit traditional Chinese arts and provides cultural activities which promote Chinese culture. During this trip, we were able to experience Chinese Stone Rubbing Art and were able to make our own piece of art. I found this trip quite memorable and fun because I was able to make a traditional Chinese art piece.

My experience at the Jao Tsung-I Academy was very fun because it was a unique experience that I had never tried. I would recommend it to the people who are looking to try something new. I also used materials that I have never tried before and it was very interesting to use and try the new tools.
我在饶宗颐文化馆的文化体验非常独特。我会向那些想尝试新事物的人推荐这个活动。我使用了以前从没有接触过的材料。 运用新的工具完成汉字艺术品让我印象深刻。
