The Year of the Rat

It has been an exciting week at KGV in the lead up to Chinese New Year. I am looking forward to this celebration and our Chinese New Year Assembly where I will get to ‘dot the eye of the Lion’. Thank you to our Chinese Language Department for coordinating the assembly.

We are all looking forward to the Year of the Rat, which occupies the first position in the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals. According to the Chinese zodiac story, in the competition held by the Jade Emperor to decide the zodiac animals, the quick-witted rat asked the diligent ox to take him on a ride to cross the river and jumped down before the ox crossed the finish line, so the rat won the race and became the first of the zodiac animals.

The rat is characterised as quick-witted, resourceful, and smart, but lacks courage. With rich imaginations and sharp observations, they can take advantage of various opportunities well. Personality traits of the people born under the sign of the rat are adaptable, smart, cautious, acute, alert, positive, flexible, outgoing and cheerful. The negative description of rat personalities can be timid, unstable, stubborn, picky, lack persistence and can be complaining.

The Chinese New Year celebration made me think about the last 12 months as we farewell the Year of the Pig. Some thoughts that come to mind are:

  • We have a great school community and I am proud of the way we are encouraging feedback and as we work together to make our school even better for our students;
  • Our students are outstanding. They are extremely hard working, intelligent and respectful;
  • Our teachers are talented and work really hard to bring the best out in our students;
  • Our parents are passionate about education and learning and invest so much to ensure ‘their child, our student’ reaches their potential;

I look forward to this year ahead with positivity regarding the opportunities it holds for our students, school and community. The rat is known for its optimism and intelligence, its ability to think quickly and its determination to succeed. Great traits for the year ahead!

I wish all of you in our school community good health and good fortune in the year ahead. We wish all our students, families and staff a wonderful Chinese New Year break and look forward to seeing our students back on Monday 3rd February.

Kind regards
