KGV Youth Leaders Strive at Hong Kong Model United Nations

Resounding applause swept through the amphitheater as Valerie Yung and Miranda Cheung were announced as an outstanding delegation in their committee. Jason Ma, Irisa Kwok, and Joaquin Magno also received honourable mentions during the closing ceremony. Along with 18 other students, KGV brought their A-game in this year’s Hong Kong Model United Nations, three intense days filled with debate and diplomatic procedure. With around 500 students in total at the conference, these delegates were comprised of the best in Hong Kong. Chris Pang, one of our student leaders, was the Deputy Chair in the Security Council. Srika Shah, Hayley Hau, and Cindy Lee, the remaining student leaders, led the charge of delegates into the MUN battle.

After being split into 11 committees, these students debated and discussed solutions to worldly issues. From nuclear terrorism to LGBTQ+ rights, the Kurdish-Turkish conflict to the War on Tobacco, our students diligently collaborated with students from over 30 different schools. Many committees feature unique components, for example, NATO requires unanimous voting to pass resolutions, and US Senate is made up of delegates representing United States’ senators. During this event, our students immersed themselves in the inner workings of the UN and they faced world and political affairs head-on.

All of KGV’s delegates performed remarkably and all of them should be proud of the growth and development that took place over those three days. This prestigious conference proved to be an enriching experience; we hope it provides this and more for students in the years to come.
