Inter-school Chess Competition

KGV experienced enormous success this year in multiple chess competitions. I am happy to share with you the successes of the KGV Chess Team.

On the 24th and 25th of March, a team of 4 students (Andy Zhang, Jasmine Leung, Pak Liu, Ismet Ozer) represented KGV in the annual Hong Kong Inter-School Chess Championship at South Island School organized by the Hong Kong Juniors Chess Club. The tournament was a 2-day event consisting of over 30 school teams with 7 rounds.

The students battled it over the weekend to get as many points as possible. With games lasting up to two hours, every player demonstrated great spirit, enthusiasm, and dedication for KGV.  In the final round, Pak Liu and Jasmine Leung both demonstrated great perseverance playing their games to the very end, winning their matches. With thirty seconds left on the clock, Jasmine Leung needed to get at least a draw for KGV to get a team prize. She dealt with the pressure and managed to checkmate her opponent, helping KGV to finish the tournament as the 3rd runner-up, a truly remarkable achievement. Huge congratulations also go to Andy Zhang who managed to become the champion player on Board 4.

On the 29th of April, KGV also participated in the Hong Kong Inter-School Team Chess Competition which was organized by ActiveKids and the Hong Kong Chess Federation. For this event, KGV entered 2 teams. Pak Liu, Jasmine Leung, Priyanshu Bhar,  and Andy Zhang was one team. The other team included Louie Choy, Vaibhav Jain, Deepak Nair, and Ismet Ozer. The first KGV team managed to finish the tournament as 3rd place. Jasmine Leung, Andy Zhang, Deepak Nair, and Ismet Ozer also managed to win board prizes. Overall, this tournament was another magnificent display from KGV.

Additionally, 3 students competed individually in the Hong Kong Juniors Rapid Chess Tournament 2018. Huge congratulations go to Pak Liu(U13-2nd), Adrian Wu(U13-6th) and Jasmine Leung(U18-2nd) for their incredible achievements.

With immense success this year in chess, hopefully, a bright future for KGV in chess lies ahead.  Thank you to Vaibhav Jain for helping with the organization of our participation in the tournaments and very special thanks to Ms. Hu who helped support our team throughout the competitions, making this success possible.
