Chinese Poetry + History Workshop at KGV with award winning poet

Chinese poetry, specifically “traditional poetry” has become a part of history in China. However, in this workshop, the main focus was to learn Chinese poetry through student’s personal experiences (their own history). This time, we are honoured to have Jeffery Lin as our guest speaker who introduced “Modern Poetry” to our students.

We have explored the different stages of life from students’ perspective. These stages include: living, childhood, school life, exams, love, communication, separation, identity/“who am I” and future. To allow students to understand more about these life stages, Jeffrey selected various modern poems to support his workshop.

With Jeffery’s guidance, students were able to learn the differences between “traditional poetry” they learnt in class with “modern poetry”. To help students create their own poems, Jeffery edited out certain verses in a few modern poems so students could complete it in their own words. By the end of the workshop, students shared poems full of feelings and emotions that they have experienced which make each a unique piece of work.
