2021 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair

Michael recently competed at the 2021 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s biggest pre-college science competition with almost 2000 finalists from 64 countries. His invention, a magnetically-powered degradable microswimmer, won the Grand Award (Second-Place) for Robotics and Intelligent Machines, and a Special Award for Best Use of Systems Engineering. Michael’s achievement was the best result for a Hong Kong delegation in the last 8 years. Michael will also have the honor of having a minor planet named after him.

Michael was congratulated by the Secretary of Education, Mr. Kevin Yeung, who commented “I trust that participating in an international competition of such a scale has been a rewarding learning experience as it has widened your perspective and horizons”. Michael was presented his award by the Permanent Secretary for Education, Ms. Michelle Li, who praised his commitment to learning.

Michael was recently invited to present his invention to the Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr. Alfred Sit, and the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Ms Rebecca Pun, at InnoCarnival 2021. Both officials praised the thoroughness of Michael’s work and encouraged him to continue promoting Hong Kong’s Innovation and Technology development.

Michael would like to thank his teachers at KGV for nurturing his love for learning and curiosity.
