Energy saving features funded by Environment and Conservation Fund

We are committed to developing a better tomorrow. With the support of the Environment and Conservation Fund, KGV was able to introduce Greening, Energy Saving and Renewable Energy Devices including a Green Roof, T5 Fluorescent Lights, LED type Exit Signs and Solar Bollard Systems.  A major objective of the project is to raise students’ awareness of how we can conserve of resources through good, responsible design choices and how we can use campus buildings and features to support learning through real world projects.

At KGV, activities throughout the school curriculum are created to raise students’ awareness of the global environment in all grades and subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Systems, Design Technology and Geography.  In fact, environmentally themed projects play a major role across our curriculum, bringing together skills and knowledge across many subjects, just as real world projects need to integrate multiple disciplines to succeed.

From the aspect of Science, the energy-saving features enable our students to examine the mechanisms of heat transfer, insulation and explain how buildings can be designed to minimise energy loss. The roof garden is used to carry out experiments on biodiversity, succession, pollination, tropic levels, germination transpiration, photosynthesis and posting. It is also a resource for maintaining and growing plants for the science department (xerophytes, mesophytes, hydrophytes, algae, for classroom learning and teaching).

Geography educational activities are also benefited from this initiative. Our students can compare and contrast the environmental friendliness of KGV buildings to eco-buildings in the world and investigate the carbon footprint of our school.  We have also fitted En-Trak to track and analyse our energy use.  Design technology students can utilise the facilities to investigate impact (effectiveness, logistics, advantages and disadvantages) of solar energy in the school environment and design an eco-friendly/sustainable communal roof garden.

Students also organise events such as Seed Planting day to share understanding of the heat island effect and the benefits of a green roof to the environment.  We also grow our own herbs to help enrich our diets and promote local initiatives which we hope our students will emulate at home.  Our eco-garden and eco-club are thriving and the initiatives have a catalysed keen interest in the environment at KGV.

Thank you to the Environment and Conservation Fund for supporting KGV and to our wider community for continuing to support our many sustainability initiatives and projects.
