KGV Football Reaches the ISSFHK Final

After a thrilling 3-2 victory against Island School, KGV progressed to the semi-finals of the ISSFHK U20 tournament and were set to play Discovery College (DC).

From the off the atmosphere was tense with both schools battling hard for possession yet neither side created any clear cut chances. It looked like a moment of magic was needed to break the deadlock and so it did. Around the 15-minute mark some good work from KGV led to a corner which Captain Jesse Yu beautifully delivered in for leading goalscorer, Theo Iversson, to head into the back of the net; 1-0. Not long after, another quality corner from Jesse Yu led to a scramble in the box before a shot hit the opposition defenders hands. Up stepped Theo Iversson, who slotted the ball down the right as cool as you like, for his 14th goal of the season. With the promise of a cup final looming and increasing confidence, it seemed the game was now slipping out of DC’s hands.

Despite being behind, DC began to seriously threaten our goal in the second half. Just when it was least needed, Goalkeeper Aditya Chaand handed the opposition a glimmer of hope. Classic! Receiving the ball at his goal line he decided to turn a football game into a ballet performance. With jaws dropped and hearts in mouths, the ball was finally cleared.

KGV, buoyed by fresh legs, pulled things together and managed to regain control of the game. Winger Brad Yue with some fantastic work down the right crossed the ball into the box for Faiz Khusro. With a gigantic open goal just half a yard away from him, he mysteriously decided to chip the ball over the crossbar. How he managed to do that is anyone’s guess!

Regardless, KGV were able to come away with a win which sees them through to the final. On Wednesday the 29th of January they have the chance to finally lift a much-needed trophy.
