ISSFHK Football Division Final: KGV Girls Compete to Win it All

KGV Girls Open Grade Football team played in the ISSFHK U20 Silver Division Final on Monday against GSIS. This is a repeat of last year’s final which clearly shows the consistently high level the team play at year after year. Girls football is open grade so the team for the final had players ranging from Year 7 up to Year 13. The game started fairly evenly with neither team threatening to score and KGV’s defence catching GSIS offside time after time. However, the deadlock was broken towards the end of the first half with two quick goals from GSIS. A little disheartened at half time, the girls picked themselves up and dominated for the first 20 minutes of the second half, but unfortunately, could not convert the chances they had. With time quickly running out, GSIS managed to seal their win with a late goal meaning for two years in a row, KGV would have to finish runners up. A huge congratulations to the team for their efforts this year.

A special mention must go to two particular players. Katharina Gerigk and Maya Renwick, both Year 13, who have played for the Girls football team for their full 7 years at KGV. Many years ago in Year 7, they started their KGV football journey playing in the U18 HKSSF league on the terrible concrete pitches across Kowloon (see photos from 2013/2014). In more recent years, they have taken on the leadership of the girls football team, being joint captains for the past two years. They have been part of team winning 4 ESF tournaments, runners up twice in the ISSFHK U20 league, 3rd place in the open grade HKSSF and runners up on tour in the U15 Phuket international tournament. What has impressed me most is how they approached their CAS Project of coaching the team and helped train and nurture the next generation of KGV girls football. They have been a credit to themselves and to KGV. I wish them the best of luck in the next step of their footballing journey.
