HKSSF B Grade Girls Division 3 Basketball Final

A fantastic final was held on the morning of Saturday 26 January for the HKSSF B Grade Girls Division 3 Championship with KGV locked in an incredibly close and competitive game with Ching Chung.  Although, ultimately, KGV came out the wrong side of a 32-27 score line, gaining the Silver medal, they can take a lot of credit for advancing further in this competition than any other KGV Girls Basketball team recent memory, having progressed through quarter and semi-finals within the previous week.

The game started strongly for Ching Chung as they illustrated smooth ball handling skills and expansive offensive skills.  KGV chipped back the lead with a series of baskets and free throws but at the close of the first half were 18:9 behind. Key challenges from Ching Chung were a towering forward who dominated under the hoop and a series of long-distance shooters.  Mr Corrigall’s wise words clearly had an effect during the break as KGV came out and steamed through to 18:17 in the third quarter, with strong end-to-end transition and defending resolutely – denying their opponents shots from the perimeter and crowding their forward inside.

The third quarter was locked in end-to-end plays with fierce defence denying their opponents few opportunities, and the score line locked at 18:17.  But, the effects of the intense play started to show as both teams began to tire. Ching Chung again surged forward to establish an advantage of 8 points.  KGV then traded the advantage of play with their opponents, linking swiftly across the court but were unable to close the gap, let down by just too many missed chances as the ball scooted around the rim.  In the final seconds the gap closed to 5 points, but the clock was run out; on one of the most exciting and competitive games at this level seen all year.
