Head of Senior School’s Message

Dear Parents,

Here we are at the end of yet another academic year. As I said to students in our assembly on Tuesday, it has been a very busy year, especially the last few weeks and it is now time for a well-deserved rest. The year 12 students especially deserve praise for surviving this year. In addition to getting plenty of rest, the summer should also include some preparatory work for next year. I have included links to summer work for Year 11 and 12 again below and also a link to the book list for year 11.

For year 12 students the summer should include some research for university applications. Most applications will be finalised by the end of December with many finalised well before. I know some of you will be visiting universities during the summer so I wish you well with this. The summer may also be an opportunity for work experience for some students. For year 10 students the summer should include some research about suitable pathways in preparation for the options deadline in November.

With regards to university applications, students apply to university with predicted as opposed to actual scores. This is but one factor universities use when making decisions. It is therefore important that as a school we are as realistic as possible with our predictions and do not overinflate and make unrealistic predictions. Students’ applications should reflect their grades. They should be making applications that include a range of universities from the ‘safe’ options (those with requirements below their predictions) and optimistic or ‘reach’ options (those with requirements just beyond their predictions). Students should not ask for a predicted grade to be increased in order to fit with their optimistic applications. At this point in time the current attainment level (CAL) on Lionel presents a realistic evidence-base for what is effectively a preliminary predicted grade (PG). As students progress into year 13 and evidence accumulates the predicted grades are likely to evolve for various reasons and will ordinarily be considered to be finalised by a particular date. Please take time to read our Predicted Grade Policy.

I would just like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your support this year. Enjoy the summer with your families and if you are travelling outside of Hong Kong I wish you all safe travels.
