Message from the
Principal
Dear Parents
As we approach the end of term it is a time to
look back at what KGV has achieved. Despite the
lingering issues surrounding the remuneration
decision by ESF I am delighted to be able to focus
on so many successes. The fact that we achieve
so much is a real tribute to our teachers and
their commitment to the wider life of the school.
I am very proud of their continuing efforts at
this difficult time.
Speech Day was an opportunity to celebrate our
academic achievements. Once again our examination
results bear comparison with the best schools
in Hong Kong, Asia and the world. We admit a comprehensive
intake of students and achieve results superior
to many selective schools. It was delightful to
see so many proud faces receiving awards and once
again, the orchestral music was outstanding. I
thoroughly enjoyed Marcus Shaw's speech and hope
that he will visit us again to work with Eden
members.
We have expanded and improved our Tutoring work
across the school. I believe that the relationship
between Tutors and their Tutees is fundamental
to successful support and guidance in schools.
Our introduction of Academic Tutoring with a focus
on target setting for all students has been a
major step forward. In the Senior School we introduced
Vertical Tutor Groups to facilitate links between
the Years, enhance House activities and improve
our ability to support all students.
I am also delighted with our continuing commitment
to develop learning and teaching. Our investment
in ICT and the introduction of designated in house
training sessions continues to support this initiative
and our lesson observations already show how much
KGV students are benefiting from these new approaches.
The range of co curricular activities remains
impressive. Spring Blossom and HKAYP seem to go
from strength to strength; we all welcomed the
return of Pedalcart (and my personal thanks to
Andy Trenaman for his superhuman efforts in organising
this activity); our sporting teams once again
are successful and it is excellent to see how
many of our students now represent Hong Kong;
the inter house Music and subsequent Highlights
evening set a new standard for music at the school;
and the Drama Festival showed what a creative
group of staff and students we have. These are
amongst the many activities that make KGV a very
special place to learn and work. I know how much
my colleagues value their commitment to maintaining
them.
Many of us will be content for 2005 to end: it
has provided more than its fair share of tragedies
and challenges. I wish you a safe, happy and peaceful
festive season and look forward to the opportunities
2006 will inevitably bring.
Best wishes
Ed Wickins
