He will then sort the children into groups of 8 or more.

GAMES

Cop nÕ Robbers

Leaders:

Emily, Prateek, Jayne

Objective:

This game is about running.

Instructions:

There are two groups, cops (also known as policemen) and robbers (also known as thieves).

The cops have to catch all the robbers.  Once a robber has been caught, he cannot move from his place. To start moving again, another robber must crawl under his legs to free him. The cops win by catching all the robbers and the robbers win by not being getting caught.  All robbers must stay inside the border, if you go outside, come back inside and stay still as though you were caught.

Other Roles:

Leaders will give a physical demonstration while they explain the rules of the game.

Other Games people will set up the border while leaders are explaining the rules.

Back-up:

If crawling is not allowed then:

a)        Standing in front and saying your name

b)        Tapping on the back

Simon Says

Leaders:

Christine, Christy

Instructions:

1       Line up the group across from you, 10 to 20 feet away.

2       Tell the players that they should all obey you when you say the words "Simon -says."

3       Tell them that they are out of the game if they follow an order that doesn't begin with "Simon says," or if they fail to do what Simon says to do.

4       (Instructions are hard to communicate, so children will have to learn the game by playing it)  Begin by saying something like, "Simon says, put your hands on your head."

5       Look to make sure everybody has put their hands on their heads.

6       Give another order such as, "Simon says, stand on one foot." Check again.

7       Continue giving orders. Mix it up and say something like, "Raise your right hand," without the preface "Simon says."

8       Call out the players who raise their hands.

9       Play until one person is left. This is the winner.

10     Let that person give the commands for the next round.

Getting Tricky:

1       Give the orders fast, in rapid succession.

2       Cut the orders short, saying, "Simon says, do this," and make the motion you want mimicked, such as putting your hands on your shoulders.

3       Do this step several times with a different command each time.

4       Quickly say "Do this," and make the motion - put your hands on your waist, for example. Many players will automatically follow your lead (and end up out of the game).

5       Relax and say something like "Straighten up the line," in a casual manner. Again, several players will comply (and they'll be out).

6       Single out specific players, especially older ones who are harder to fool. Say, "Chris, move back (or up) a step." She might fall for it.

7       Ask a question every now and then. Point and ask, "What's your name again?" If the person answers, he's out.

Keep the pace moving fast. Everyone will be laughing so hard, they won't care who's in or out, or who wins or loses.

Fruit Salad

Leaders:

Emily, Christy

Instructions:

1       Ask the children to sit in the circle of chairs.

2       Going around the circle, each child is given the name of one of three fruits( or five depending on the number of kids)e.g., apple, pear, banana, until everyone has a fruit name that they need to remember.

3       Start by having one child standing in the centre of the circle and calling out the names of one fruit. Everyone who is that fruit (e.g., all the 'apples') must get up and quickly move to an empty chair. Those who are not 'apples' remain seated. Whoever ends up without a chair then takes a turn in the middle, calling out the name of one group of fruit again.

4       To get everyone to move all at once, the person in the middle calls out 'fruit salad.'

5       To make the game more fun, we can make the game pace faster (getting the kids to move quicker and the person in the middle to call out names faster). We can also start ÔeliminatingÕ people by taking chairs away.

Octopus

Leaders:

Carlo, Prateek

Objective:

To cross from one side to another in a rectangular area.

Instructions:

There will be several chosen octopuses that will scatter in the area. These octopuses would not be able to move around as their feet must stay on the ground at all times. The octopus will need to tag the people who are crossing. Once they are tagged, they stop and stand still and become an octopus. When everyone has crossed from one side to anther, the octopus turns around and does it again.

Hokey Pokey

Leaders:

Caren, Nicole

Lyrics:

You put your right foot in,
You put your right foot out;
You put your right foot in,
And you shake it all about.
You do the Hokey-Pokey,
And you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about!

Repeat Song, but say ÒhandÓ instead

You put your left foot in,
You put your left foot out;
You put your left foot in,
And you shake it all about.
You do the Hokey-Pokey,
And you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about!
