Counselling Services |
Our school provides counselling to our students to support them in addressing difficulties that affect their social, emotional, behavioural or academic lives. We believe that happy students learn more effectively, and that students when facing life struggles be it peer pressure, parental divorce or adapting to a new school, often benefit from counselling support.
We provide 7 hours of counselling per week provided by Phoenix Counselling Service on Thursdays. This service can be accessed directly by our parent and student community or if you would prefer, you can discuss the appropriateness of this service for your child with your child's tutor / Head of House / Head of College
Counselling in school is often short term in focus; we will provide all of our students that are in need of this valuable service a maximum of eight sessions in any one school year. If a student requires longer-term support, we will require parents to consider this and financially support if necessary.
Counselling is confidential, and students right to privacy will be safeguarded, however when a young person is at risk of harm, our counsellor will liaise directly with parents to ensure that the safety of young person is the paramount consideration.
Our counsellor attached to our school is Jan Beasley. She is a qualified and experienced Person Centered Counsellor trained in the United Kingdom. Jan has worked with adults and young people in schools, hospices and the community. Jan has specialist interests in depression, grief and loss and cross-cultural transition. Jan can offer support to students and their families. For a discussion you can contact her at jan.beasley@kgv.edu.hk or jan@phoenixpractice.com. Or you may call her at school when she is available on Thursdays.
We also hope to extend our support to parents and families this year by offering some interesting and helpful workshops aimed at parent education.
For any further information about our counselling service you can liaise directly with Jackie Greenwood Director of Phoenix Counselling Service at jackie@phoenixpractice.com.
The school also has a Social Worker that is based full time in school. Christina Lam is a registered social worker as well as a qualified counsellor. She works under the Hong Kong Sheung Kung Hui Kowloon City Children and Youth Integrated Services Centre which provide a strong professional support to her services in school including youth guidance services; volunteer training; adventure-based youth challenge activities and training; family counselling and parents' support groups; clinical assessment for mental health and learning disabilities etc.
Christina is available all day on Monday to Wednesday and also Friday. Appointments can either be made through the appropriate Head of Hourse / Head of College or directly with Christina. Christina can be contacted through both email at christina.lam@kgv.edu.hk or direct line at 2760 6685.
