What Should I Include?

bullet

Introduction - This basically has to answer the question above. You have to decide if the Christian faith informs greatly the debate over Euthanasia, if it contributes nothing to the debate or whether it is in-between or whether it is highly influential

What is the debate over Euthanasia? First you will have to establish exactly what is Euthanasia – this will have to be a very detailed piece of work including quotations and sources (at least 5) before forming your own definition. Remember there are several different types of euthanasia and all will need to be included - voluntary, non voluntary, passive and active.  You will also need to include the legal situation in Europe, Holland, UK, USA and Australia. The debate centers round several ideas:

bullet

Who has the right to say when a life ends? You? The doctor? The scientist? A court?

bullet

What kind of a life is not a life? When you are being kept alive by a machine? When you are in a coma? When you are mentally or physically handicapped?

bullet

What role does technology play in this? We are now keeping people alive through technology that in the past would have died from their ailments. To what extent is technology making the debate harder for us?

bullet

In all of these cases it would be a great idea if you could find real cases to highlight your points. I.e. Tony Bland, the Siamese Twins. Dr Death. How has the different debate areas been highlighted in these specific cases?

bullet

What does the Christian faith have to say about Euthanasia? Here you will have to include a lot of detail about how Christians view life as being sacred. This needs to be backed up with bible passages and teachings and needs to be extensive! Also look at the idea of creation, natural law and catholic teachings, also look at the work of "LIFE" the agency against Euthanasia/

bullet

Does the Christian view have any influence on the Euthanasia debate today? If so, how much? What else influences the debate and WHY. Does the law play a large role? What about the expectations of society always looking for quick fix solution to problems? What about the advancement of technology? The decline in the influence of religion? Is the importance of religion increasing? Look at the presidential elections in the USA. Is religion making a valuable contribution to the debate? Should it be doing more?

bullet

The question is asking you "how may" the Christian religion influence the debate? In many respects this is asking you should the religion do more? Is it doing its duty in protecting the idea of the sanctity of life? Should religion become more involved in politics?

bullet

Conclusion - This is basically summing up all your ideas from above and stating what your final answer is with good reasoning and evidence. You might also want to offer some sort of alternative to the question. If Christianity if not informing the debate then what is? And what is the way forward?
