The Oslo Peace Accord

Date:  September 13^th, 1993

Your report must focus on the Oslo Peace accord, the way it was negotiated and the promises of peace it suggested.

You should have the following people in your ‘broadcast’:

• News anchor – this is the person at the desk who gives the initial report.
• Reporter at the scene – describes what is happening
• People you may wish to interview – eyewitnesses to the event, political leaders who may wish to comment, experts on Arab/Israeli/British affairs who can give background information.

  Event to focus on: Yitzak Rabin and Yasir Arafat shaking hands at the White House with Bill Clinton

  Background information to include:

• The Yom Kippur War helped restore some Arab confidence (brief)
• Anwar Sadat and his attempts at peace
• The first Palestinian Intifada
• The first Gulf War against Saddam – world looks to the problems of the Middle East and sees Israel.
• Secret talks in Oslo
• What the Oslo agreement actually said.

• Bill Clinton
• Yitzak Rabin - Israeli Prime Minister
• Yasir Arafat – head of the PLO
• Simeon Peres – Israeli Foreign Minister
