Assignment - the crucifixion.

Aim: To understand the events surrounding the death of Jesus.

                                  To develop journalist writing skills.

Task.

You are to design the front cover of a newspaper, set in the 1^st century, when Jesus died.  You are to imagine that it is the day after Jesus has died and you are reporting on the events surrounding his death.  Your newspaper should include:

• A title for your paper (e.g. The Jerusalem Times)
• A Headline – this should be sensational as newspaper headlines are designed to grab your attention and make you buy their paper! (e.g. Death of a King?)
• The story – your story must focus on the death of Jesus.  You can include some background information on Jesus – his age, hometown, friends, as well as the reasons why he was crucified.  However, the main part of the story must surround the actual events of his death – the trial, the crucifixion itself and what happened while he was on the cross.
• An interview with an eyewitness.  Obviously you will have to make this up.  Think of who was at the crucifixion and how they would have felt.  Some people you may want to interview include Jesus’ mum, Mary, his disciples, the guards, some of the Jewish leaders who had him arrested, a passer-by.  Make sure your interview is separate from your story.
• A picture – you can draw this or use the computer.

  This assignment makes up a part of your final grade so it is important that you complete all of the above sections.  You may use the internet, the Bible, books from the library and your own notes to complete this assignment but remember, DO NOT COPY. Your own words are always more important to us!

* Bible - the four Gospels all have the story of Jesus' death.  It can be found in:

 - Matthew, chapters 26-27

 - Luke 22-24

 - Mark 14-15

 - John 18-19

Go to www.biblegateway.com and type in these references if you want to read their versions of the story.

* Internet - Jesus is a very popular topic on the 'net so if you are going to do a google search try to narrow down your search by including words like Jesus+ crucifixion.

 * Books - there are LOADS of books in the library - check with the librarian.  You can also use the text books in your RS classroom - ask your teacher before you borrow anything!
