Afro-Americans in USA during the 20th Century

 

This last term you have studied the history of the slave trade and slavery in the USA. You have also not only seen how slavery was ended in 1865 but also how racial discrimination continued into this century.

 

This is a very short exercise to enable you to find out how people were still fighting in the 1960’s in order to achieve racial equality in USA. These events involved some very famous people – but their story shows that the fight for equality is by no means over.

Date of Birth – where he was brought up – his job – what he believed – what tactics he used – and some examples of his achievements in the 1960’s – his death

From what you have found out about Martin Luther King what do you think was his greatest achievement?

THE BLACK POWER MOVEMENT

Explain what the Black Power Movement stood for and wanted to achieve – in what very important way did their methods differ from those used by Martin Luther King? – give one or two names of Black Power Members and write down one or two of their achievements.

Do you think that they achieved more than Martin Luther King?
