INDIVIDUAL PROJECT WORK.

Aims:

To learn how the Plains Indians lived.

Resources:

Text Book – ‘The Plains Indians’

The Internet. See the chosen sites at the end of this worksheet.

Task:

You have already studied how the Plains Indians lived in Tipis and how hunting and warfare were important to them. You now have to research:

1. Family Life.

2. Clothes.

3. Food.

4. Law and Order.

First, use the following guidelines to make notes in your own words on each topic. Start by using your textbook and then look at the suggested Internet sites.

Finally, when all your notes are complete, design a two page booklet under the title ‘How The Plains Indians Lived’. Remember to include writing and diagrams for each topic.

1. FAMILY LIFE.

Read pages 36 – 39 in your textbook. Make notes in your own words about:

a). Bands, Tribes and Nations.

(Describe what each of the words mean and give examples of the different tribes)

b). Children.

(Include how they were brought up and how they treated other family members)

c). Braves and Squaws.

(Describe the different expectations for both men and women)

d). Widows and Old People.

(Describe how widows and old people were treated)

2. CLOTHES.

Read page 40 in your textbook.

a). Look at ordinary clothes.

b). Look at clothes worn for a special occasion.

3. FOOD.

Use the Internet to research this section.

a). Describe the different types of food they ate.

4. LAW AND ORDER.

Read pages 40 – 41 of your textbooks.

a). Describe how custom and tradition kept law and order in Indian society.

b). Describe the role of the Council and the Chiefs.

c). Describe how warrior societies protected their tribes.

Once you have used your textbook, use the following Internet sites to add detail to your notes.

Once all your notes are complete, you can begin to design your two-page booklet. Remember that the title is ‘How the Plains Indians Lived’ and that you need to include both written work and pictures.

Good Luck!
