The Reasons for, and Issues Associated with Edge of Town Development.

Brief:       Increasingly, traditional “CBD” type commercial developments are opting for urban fringe “Greenfield” sites as their chosen location. One such example is the “Bluewater” shopping centre in Kent, South Western  UK.

Task:       Using EITHER: one side of A3 OR two sides of A4 paper, you are to design an educational resource, which would be used for future Year 11 Geography students. It can be produced by hand or on the computer, but should be presented in a STIMULATING way, and should contain all the necessary information, together with relevant maps, diagrams and photos.

It needs to cover the following areas:

Ø            Where is Bluewater? (to include specific site info)

Ø            What are the main characteristics of the development?

Ø            Why was this site chosen by the developers?

Ø            Why would big name stores choose to locate here, rather than in the CBD?

Ø            What impacts has this development had on the area, including neighbouring settlements? (employment/competition/transport issues/env. concerns etc)

Ø            How might opinions vary towards these sorts of developments?

A good place to start your research is “ www.bluewater.co.uk

You will be given details of deadlines by your teacher.
