Musicians of all ages, abilities, interests and musical styles are well catered for and encourage to fully participate in a wide programme of events and performances. Our superb Junior Orchestra is for orchestral players ranging between Grade 3 to 6 standard, where our flagship Senior Orchestra is for pupils from Grade 7 and beyond. Both orchestra play a wide range of classical and popular repertoire - ranging from Harry Potter, Extracts from the Polar Express, Brandenburg Concertos, Grieg's Holberg Suite and other many exciting and challenging works.
Junior Choir is open to all pupils in Year 7 and 8, Senior Choir is open to all pupils in Year 9 to 13. Lots of pupils enjoy taking part and singing in harmony - we also perform a wide range of music including pieces such as Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring, For The Beauty of the Earth by Rutter as well as popular and lively pieces such as The World In Union, The Rhythm of Life and Let The River's Run. We regularly and really enjoy performing alongside the school orchestras.
We have many smaller ensembles that get together for various events throughout the year including Chamber Orchestras, String Quartets, Trio Sonatas, Vocal Groups and Bands.
The KGV Jazz Band has been going strong for many years - open to Brass, Reed and Rhythm Section Players - we are a regular feature at the Rugby 7s, He-Be-Haven and other events in and out of school. Our repertoire includes Watermelon Man, Fly Me To The Moon and Summertime.
Our Rock Musicians are well catered for and are always welcome to set-up and rehearse their groups during lunchtimes. The school runs a competition for these musicians to take part and showcase their talent and work - Lion Rock Unplugged (the acoustic version) and Lion Rock (for a more electric/heavy-metal style).
There are numerous performance opportunities for pupils at KGV for all ensembles and soloists including performances at Assembly, KGV Speech Day and Junior Celebration, the Carol Concert and School Musical, concerts in the City Hall, our outstanding and long-running Inter House Music competition, Lion Rock and also pupils who take part in the Hong Kong Speech and Music Festival. Some of our high achieving musicians have given performances that have won first-class awards beyond KGV.
The department has also toured the Orchestra and Choir overseas to places such as America, UK, Australia, Italy and Spain.
