Creativity Action Service (CAS)

CAS is a compulsory part of the IB Diploma core alongside TOK and the Extended Essay. Students must complete a recommended 150 hours of CAS with 50 hours each of Creativity, Action and Service. Students who are taking the Advanced Diploma course need to complete 60 hours of CAS with 20 hours of Creativity Action and Service.

All students must reflect on their CAS experiences in their ePortfolios and have regular interviews with their tutors to discuss their progress, what they have learned and areas they need to focus on in the future.

There are no points awarded by IB for CAS but it is a "failing" condition of the Diploma. Progress in CAS is monitored throughout Year 12 and 13 and parents are alerted if there are problems with completion at the end of Year 12 and at Chinese New Year in Year 13.

CAS can be achieved in three ways at KGV:

1. Through Challenge Week - all students in Year Twelve and Thirteen take part in Challenge Week where they experience CAS activities both here in Hong Kong and abroad. All students in the Senior School are expected to complete a reflection of their week, to think about their challenges and explain how they have met them.

2. Through Structured CAS - all Year 12 students are expected to sign up for a Structured CAS lesson in areas such as Young Enterprise, Peer Support, Peer Mentoring, HKAYP, Charity Committee, Community Service, Crafts for Charity, Pedal Kart, Reading Centre and Library Enterprises and Sports Leadership. This is a weekly lesson supervised by teachers which aims to give the students the skills to take on extra responsibilities in the school and work with each other outside of the classroom.

3. Through the Extra and Co Curricular programmes - there is a wide variety of programmes available here at school to help students earn their CAS hours as well as the wide variety of activities students complete in their own time. We also offer support in finding Community Service placements.

We do not expect CAS to be an onerous task for students and it should, wherever possible, fit in with the activities they already complete. We like to give extra credit to those students who organize their own activities at their own initiative rather than just using school based programmes. Please see the CAS area on LIONel for more details.
