Design & Technology |
Design Technology is a thriving subject at KGV and is taught across the age ranges. The department is housed in 10 fully equipped specialist work areas. We have 2 Textiles rooms, 2 Kitchens, 3 Workshops and 2 Graphics rooms, all of which boast high levels of up to date resources and CAD CAM equipment.
All students in Years 7 to 9 have Design Technology lessons, and are taught in rotation. They study Food, Resistant Materials, Electronics, Textiles and Technology in Society. We are hoping to develop a new Eco Room that will develop a new and vital area of the rotation to establish good environmental practices in design. The programmes of study at this level, equip the students with basic practical skills, and the skills to design products for themselves and others. It aims to build confidence and a love of designing and making.
In Year 10 and 11 students have the opportunity to opt for GCSE Design Technology in whatever material area they prefer to work in. It is a popular choice with students at KGV, and we have in excess of 80 students following some aspect of Design Technology every year. The programmes of study are practically based and aim to deepen the understanding of the design process. It hopes to equip the students with independent working skills, encourage them to be creative, and promote critical evaluation skills.
In Years 12 and 13, the department follows the IB Design Technology course and this is also a popular choice for students. We have in excess of 60 students choosing Design Technology at this level every year, and students specialise in their preferred material area. The programme is wide-ranging and exposes students to a wider view of Technology. At this level, the study is both academic and practical, and aims to engage the students as independent learners, thinkers and researchers.
The department has 9 full-time teaching staff and is ably supported by 3 full-time technicians.
