Drama

Drama is a thriving subject at KGV and is taught across the age ranges and the department is housed in 3 fully equipped drama studios.

All students in Years 7 to 9 have drama lessons, with a specialist teacher, at least once a week. The programme of study at this level equips the students with basic performance knowledge and understanding, as well as communication and group work skills. It aims to build confidence and draws its curriculum content from across the globe.

In Year 10 and 11 students have the opportunity to opt for GCSE Drama and is a popular choice with in excess of 70 students following the course every year. The programme of study is wholly practical and aims to deepen performance understanding as well as equipping the students with independent working, creative thinking and critical evaluation skills.

In Years 12 and 13, the department follows the IB Theatre Arts course and is a popular Group 6 choice. The programme is wide-ranging and exposes students to traditional and contemporary theatre practice from an international perspective. At this level the study is both academic and practical and aims to engage the students as independent learners, thinkers and researchers.

The department is an active member of ISTA , the International Schools Theatre Association and we regularly attend and host festivals in the Asia Pacific region.  We also run theatre trips to both the UK and Australia, where we work and train with professional theatre practitioners.

The department plays a full and active role in the co-curricular life of the school with a range of public performances and events.  We work in close collaboration with the Drama and Theatre departments in our sister schools in the ESF which allows us to bring into our school the best professional theatre practice from across the world in terms of visiting specialists and residencies. In the near future we will be moving into purpose built facilities that will be housed in the new Performing Arts Centre.

The department currently has three full-time teaching staff as well as a number of part-time members and is ably supported by a full-time technician. We sit within the Creativity and Performance Learning Area of the school.
