Art |
The Art department enjoys an impressive location on the fifth floor with panoramic views over Hong Kong and Lion Rock. The department is well equipped with three large studios and one smaller space for senior work. There is a dedicated area for ceramics, computers and printmaking are all well catered for at the school. The department has an enviable reputation as a centre of excellence often producing exciting and innovative work. There are four full time teaching members of the department one full time technician and a full time support staff member.
In Y7 to Y9 students follow an interesting programme, which builds on the key skills of the visual language across a variety of disciplines based on a Fine Art foundation.
In Y10 and Y11 students have the option to work on the Edexcel GCSE Art course. The numbers are always very healthy with around 60 students exhibiting their work at the end of the year. The examination results have been consistently high over recent years, which is an indication of the quality of teaching and student work.
In Y12 and Y13 two pathways are open to the students; they can take Art as part of the IB Diploma course or can continue in this creative area with an Applied A Level in Art and Design. Both options are well subscribed to and although they have a different emphasis both produce outstanding work from the students. There is an emphasis for students to develop as individual thinkers and problem solve as they come up with creative solutions to their devised projects.
The department makes use of the thriving city of Hong Kong as a resource and is always keen to make the most of visiting exhibitions and events to broaden the student's exposure to Art. A resident artist programme has been used in recent years with both local and international artists working in school.
Creativity has a high profile around the school and the department contributes to the broader life of this busy international community.
